Surface and near-surface atmospheric temperatures for the Mars Exploration Rover landing sites

چکیده
Downward-looking spectra of the martian surface from the Miniature Thermal Emission spectrometer (Mini-TES), onboard each of the two Mars Exploration Rovers, are modeled in order to retrieve surface and near-surface atmospheric temperatures. By fitting the observed radiance in the vicinity of the 15-μm CO2 absorption feature, the surface temperature and the near-surface atmospheric temperature, approximately 1.1 m above the surface, are determined. The temperatures from the first 180 sols (martian days) of each surface mission are used to characterize the diurnal dependence of temperatures. The near-surface atmospheric temperatures are consistently 20 K cooler than the surface temperatures in the warmest part of each sol, which is 1300–1400 LTST (local true solar time) depending on the location. Seasonal cooling trends are seen in the data by displaying the temperatures as a function of sol. Long ground stares, 8.5 min in duration, show as much as 8 K fluctuation in the near-surface atmospheric temperatures during the early afternoon hours when the near-surface atmosphere is unstable. 2005 Elsevier Inc. Meteorological predictions for 2003 Mars Exploration Rover high-priority landing sites
[1] The Mars Regional Atmospheric Modeling System is used to predict meteorological conditions that are likely to be encountered by the Mars Exploration Rovers at several proposed landing sites during entry, descent, and landing. Seven areas, five of which contain specific high-priority landing ellipses, are investigated: Hematite (two sites), Isidis Planitia, Elysium Planitia (two sites), Vall...
متن کاملRover Localization and Landing-Site Mapping Technology for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover Mission
The technology and experiments planned for rover localization and landing site mapping in the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission are described. We introduce the Mars global and landing site local reference systems. For global rover localization in the Mars body-fixed reference system, a triangulation can be performed using observations of common landmarks on satellite images and the very...
متن کاملRobotics Technology for Planetary Surface Exploration
In Japan new lunar or planetary exploration missions including landers and rovers are earnestly under study. Those missions will follow up SELENE (SELenoligical Engineering Explorer), a lunar global remote sensing mission. One of main missions for lunar robotics exploration in post SELENE missions is to demonstrate the technologies for lunar or planetary surface exploration and human activities...
متن کاملMission Design for Combined Lander-rover Modeling of a Skylight
Introduction: Combined lander-rover modeling is the transformational means for developing high resolution, color, three-dimensional representations of planetary features such as cave entrances and skylights. Lander-rover modeling combines registered overflight imagery with rover-based surface imaging techniques to build highly accurate co-registered models. The models produced by this approach ...
متن کاملSharad Sounding and Surface Roughness of Once and Future Mars Landing Sites
Introduction: To search for subsurface interfaces and characterize surface roughness, the Shallow Radar (SHARAD) instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is observing past, present, and proposed future Martian landing sites. Orbital and landed imagery and altimetry data show that most sites are located atop layered sequences that extend over tens to hundreds of kilometers and are hundreds ...
